Series: other coins The commemorative coin “Archistrateg Michael” is dedicated to one of the main archangels, known as Archistratig Michael, which in Greek means “commander-in-chief”. Among believers, this is one of the most revered biblical characters, who leads the “heavenly army of angels” and is the patron saint of victors fighting for a righteous cause. The respectful attitude towards Archistrateg Michael has been preserved from the times of Kievan Rus to the present day. He became a symbol of heavenly protection for the Kiev princes, and later his veneration was enshrined in toponymy – in the names of church buildings, as well as in heraldry – on the coats of arms of Kiev, the Kiev Voivodeship and the Kiev Province.
