Description: If you are a collector of things New York, modern architecture or urban views, this painting might well appeal to you. It is a 1950’s view of Park Avenue around 53rd Street and prominently features the gleaming Lever House office building at dusk. I would wager that the painting was done within 8 years of the 1952 completion of Gordon Bunshaft’s and SOM’s early curtain wall office building (the second in New York, after the UN Building). The painting is signed just “Vivian”, lower left. I have owned and enjoyed this painting for almost 20 years. About 5 years ago I saw an eBay listing for a 1951 Boston urban snow scene by the artist Vivian Ferris and the signature and style were extremely similar to mine. Therefore I am attributing the artist as being Vivian Ferris. The scene is looking down on Park Avenue from about 12 floors up. Although it is somewhat naive in style, it shows many of the surrounding buildings in good perspective and detailing. The colors are rich and well chosen. The sky is somewhat illuminated and the sense of dusk’s light quite convincing. One extra bonus is the view into one of the apartment windows in the building directly across Park Avenue, on the east side. There one finds a woman that appears to be working at an easel. That could very well be Vivian herself, placed in the composition, as a self portrait. The oil on canvas measures 22” by 28” high. It comes in a period modernist frame that has a Miesian profile. That gives the painting a floating quality within the frame. Overall framed dimensions are a little over 23” x 29”. The stretchers of the painting appear to be handmade, as opposed to store bought. Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition, with no apparent repairs or damage. I had the painting professionally cleaned and varnished. For the right person, collection, or context, this mid century painting would definitely become a conversation piece for others to enjoy as well.
