Farrar, who established a pottery in Syracuse, New York, in 1841. Farrer made salt-glazed stoneware and Rockingham pieces such as dogs and spittoons. In 1857, he moved his plant moved from Genessee Street to Fayette Street to be closer to the Erie Canal. In 1868, Farrar sold his operations to Peter Coykendall and a group of investors who renamed the company the Empire Pottery.Following an 1871 reorganization, Empire Pottery became the Onondaga Pottery Company. A group of 16 local businessmen provided the capital. The company was located in Geddes, New York, which is now part of Syracuse. Raw materials and fuel were transported to the plant on the Erie Canal.Lyman Clark, an English potter, was the plant superintendent. He hired other English potters and trained local men. When Clark left, Richard Pass replaced him.In 1879, Onondaga Pottery Company started to make dinnerware. Onondaga produced undecorated wares until 1884. In that year, Elmer Walter founded the Boston China Decorating Works across from Onondaga. When fire destroyed Walter’s plant in 1886, Onondaga hired Walter and his employees and create an in-house decorating shop.In the mid-1880s, Onondaga introduced a high-fired, semi-vitreous ware that was guaranteed against crackling and crazing. In 1888, Richard’s son James Pass perfected Imperial Geddo, a translucent, vitrified china. Onondaga introduced it in 1901. Imperial Geddo won several awards at the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exhibition. By the early 1890s, Onondaga Pottery offered a full line of fine china wares. In 1895, Onondaga started using a Syracuse China backstamp. Onondaga installed its first in-house lithograph shop in 1896. By 1897, Onondaga stop producing earthenware dinnerware.Onondaga made commercial, china with a thicker more durable body, as well as household china. Bert Salisbury succeeded James Pass as present in 1913. In 1921, a new plant on Court Street devoted exclusively to commercial production was opened.Adobe, introduced in 1931, and Old Ivory, introduced in 1926, were two of Onondaga’s Syracuse China bodies. R. Guy Cowan, who became the company’s chief designer, created the Econo-Rim shape line in 1933. It remains in production. The shape was ideal for commercial china. During World War II, Syracuse manufactured non-detectable ceramic anti-tank land mines. In 1954, an Electronics Division was created to supply printed ceramic components for radio and television manufacturers. This Division closed in 1959.In 1959, Onondaga Pottery established Vandesca Pottery, Ltd. in Joliette, Quebec. It was the only Canadian firm to make vitrified china. It closed in 1994.Until 1971, ownership in Onondaga Pottery rested primarily in the hands of two Syracuse families. After four generations, the family ended its direct involvement. A new management group bought the old company and renamed it the Syracuse China Corporation. Since 1970, Syracuse China has devoted it production efforts to airline, commercial, hotel, and restaurant china. In April 1978, Syracuse China Company merged with Canadian Pacific Investments, LtdIn 1984, Syracuse China acquired the Mayer China Company in 1983 and Shenango Pottery in 1988. By the early 1990s, all wares were made at the Syracuse plant. Susquehanna-Pfaltzgraff purchased Syracuse China in 1989. In 1995, Libbey, Inc., of Toledo, Ohio, acquired Syracuse China. In 2009, Libbey closed the Syracuse plant and moved production off-shore. Today, the company supplies china to the food service industry. B-RS
