Description: G. Alan Chidsey was a book dealer and lawyer from Plandom, N.Y. Chidsey served as a trustee to the Marsden Hartley estate. This is a kind of tribute book, complied and created by hand by Chidsey. He took handcut examples of Witold Gordon's artwork, including illustrations from the New Yorker and many other publications, and hand-pasted them inside this small hardcover book. He mailed this to Witold Gordon, and told him of his exchanges with other artists. He wrote: "Dear Mr. Gordon:I'ver made what you think is a most attractive book about you and your fine artistic talent--and have forwarded it under separate cover(through the kindness of Vogue) for your inspection.I have made these books for practically every great artist in America. Not wishing to sell them for cash I have accepted in exchange some bit of their work.As a result I have what some critics have called the most unique collection of contemporary art in the United States. I can't begin to list all the artists who have enthusiastically "swapped" with me but just to give you an idea, here are a few: -Corbino, Dehn, Grosz, Soyer, Bohrod, Fletcher Martin, Benton, Curry, Grant Wood, Cadmus, etc. etc. and the pictures they have sent have been everything from large oils to small drawings!!!I hope that you will like the book and will wish to keep it. If you do, the choice of what your should send me is entirely up to you but I hope that you think it should be a watercolor!!
