It is a little tricky getting into it, but not really difficult: First, you lift up the 2 pieces near the tails, then you slide off the top covers. That reveals 2 lift out lids which expose the 2 storage areas. A brief note for those who will ask what kind of wood it is. We don't know. These are made in India using indigenous woods which the artisans do not name. But we have always worked on the basis that if you like what it looks like what does it matter what it's called.
