Description: Original WW2 THIRD REICH military map of ITALY & YUGOSLAVIA entitled "POLA" (PULA in modern day Croatia). The city was a vital port on the Adriatic coast which would become an operational base for German U-Boats. After printing, the map has been ink stamped by hand with the heading...."Nur für den Dienstgebrauch" (equivalent to a "RESTRICTED" British military map). Printed in September 1939 by the AUSTRIAN military mapping services, which had been under German control since 1938. However, the map was clearly captured by the Allies at some point, and eventually found its way to Edinburgh University via the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. This was no doubt facilitated by Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE who (in the late 1940's) was both the President of the Society, and Head of the Geography Department at the University. OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, and still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. The map spent several more decades as part of the archives of Edinburgh University, who recently sold it off as part of a larger collection. Has never been folded, so will be shipped rolled in a cardboard tube.
